The Never-Ending March
On a wooded Virginia hillside overlooking the Potomac River
and Washington, DC, is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
"Here Rests In Honored Glory An American Soldier Known But To God".
On March 21, 1921, Congress approved the burial of an
unidentified American soldier from World War One in the
plaza of the new Memorial Amphitheater. Sculpted into
the panel that faces East, facing Washington, are three
Greek figures representing Peace, Victory, and Valor.
Remains of unknown soldiers from World War Two, Korea
and Vietnam have been buried in the walkway in front of
the original sarcophagus. A member of the U.S. Army's
"Old Guard" stands watch over the tomb around the clock,
pacing twenty-one steps back and forth year round.
