Waiting, Always Waiting
Standing in line is a way of life for Cubans. Different goods
are sold at different stores: vegetables in one place, meat in
another, dry goods only at certain locations. These shoppers are
resigned to waiting in line for fruits and vegetables. At seven
in the morning on a Saturday, a crowd sometimes six rows deep
and more than a block long will wait for a dry goods store to
open. Cubans have a government-issued green card that allows
one purchase of meat once a week, and that is if the store
has meat in stock.
