Inside Information?
Deciding he needed a change in the lineup, President Clinton
tapped a Republican - former Nixon and Reagan White House
official and consummate Washington insider David Gergen - to
straighten things out. In an early-morning Rose Garden
weekend press conference, Clinton announced Gergen's
appointment, replacing George Stephanoupolis as the
director of White House communications. In retrospect, it
didn't seem to help much. Gergen, who had been a Senior
Editor at USNews & World Report, didn't stay at the
White House long enough to keep his boss out of trouble.
